Verneh (also known as “Sileh Kilim” or “Soumak Kilim”) is a type of soumak weaving traditionally crafted without a pattern by the nomadic girls and women of the Arasbaran region. Verneh is essentially a pileless, single-sided kilim woven in the weft-wrapping technique, where the main weft passes through the warp threads while the colored wool yarns are wrapped around the warps to form the motifs.

A typical Verneh design consists of three main components: the border, the field, and the central medallion (göl, meaning “pool”). One of its key decorative features is the S-shaped motif, sometimes appearing as “S” or “5,” which in nomadic culture symbolizes a dragon.

Verneh weavers beautifully incorporate geometric depictions of animals such as deer, gazelles, wolves, sheepdogs, turkeys, roosters, jackals, foxes, and various local birds, creating a striking and expressive visual language.
