Verneh—also known as Souzani Kilim—is a type of Sumak flatweave traditionally crafted without the use of a pattern, woven intuitively by the girls and women of the Arasbaran nomadic tribes.
In essence, Verneh is a single-sided kilim or a pile-less rug-like flatweave, created through the weft-wrapping technique, where the main weft passes through the warps while colored wool yarns are wrapped around the warp threads to form the motifs.
A typical Verneh design consists of three main components: the border, the field, and the medallion (or göl, meaning “pool”).
One of its most recognizable decorative features is the S-shaped motif, sometimes appearing as an “S” or “5”, symbolizing the image of a dragon in nomadic culture.
Verneh weavers beautifully incorporate stylized geometric representations of animals such as deer, gazelles, wolves, sheepdogs, turkeys, roosters, jackals, foxes, and various local birds, creating a visually striking and culturally rich textile.
